Inspired by ‘Cherries’, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1873
The blue feather is recurring in this piece (part of my series ‘Realms’) as a symbol of hope. Hope amidst coping with loss, sickness and death as life continues in its cycle. The violets were associated with mourning in Victorian times.
Saskia Huitema is a self-taught Dutch traditional artist whose main focus is on portraits, but critters, florals and landscapes also find their way into her paintings. Her narrative work is distinguished by the use of color, crispness, and a flourish of subtle emotions.
