Chantal: Something Changed

Chantal: Something Changed

Material: Oil on canvas
Size: 70 x 100 cm

In this painting, I wanted to explore the feelings that arise as a result of a moment when something changes irreversibly. The build-up of paint reflects the layers of time and self-analysis, as the subject recalls the memory of the moment, over and over again.
Bennett creates distinctive gestural portraits that allow her to examine in paint, her fascination with the human face. Led by the process of painting she distorts the reality of the features to give her subjects an emotional charge as she considers the individual within a society increasingly driven by celebrity culture. Her works have been featured in various publications ranging from Curatorspace (2020), Google Arts and Culture (2020), Classic Rock (2019), Londonist (2013), The Guardian (2011), The Independent, (2008), Evening Standard (2007) to Stylist (2011). Bennett has recently completed a 6-week art residency at London's prestigious Bankside Hotel for Contemporary Collective Gallery. Bennett has exhibited solo and in various group exhibitions. UK exhibitions include those at Transition Two (2020), Norden Farm Centre for the Arts (2020), Dulwich Picture Gallery (2018), Degree Art (2017), Studio 1.1 (2015), Deptford X Festival (2013), Victoria and Albert Museum (2010) and Saatchi Online (2008).
