Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Slovenia. We travelled a big part of the Mediterranean to film different sides of the ongoing refugee crisis for different Dutch broadcasters. I incorporate the impressions of these trips in this experimental series of documentary paintings.
France, 1978. Cameraman, filmmaker and visual artist living and working in Amsterdam / The Netherlands.
'As a television cameraman, I probably filmed some 400 reports in over 50 countries during the past twenty years. I covered anything from natural disasters, warzones and diseases to political events, music videos and short documentaries.
Through these travels, I was privileged to obtain a unique and very personal look into humanity and our global society. I was able to witness up close what most of us will only learn about through media.
Back in my studio, I transferred the Stories I encountered on my journeys into something more lasting than television: Writing & Painting.'
'As an artist, I think you should be an activist: an esthetic journalist, a philosopher, a wanderer. Art, to me, is a tool to investigate ourselves, our ways of life, our community's, our connection to the things in life our minds cannot explain. Art is a search for meaning, an ongoing quest in which we should never want to look for answers but rather keep questioning what we believe to be true and rational so we can keep the magic of our imagination and the playfulness of our souls alive.'
